Americans favor Afghan withdrawal

WASHINGTON, May 11 (UPI) -- Six in 10 Americans say it's time for the United States to end to the war in Afghanistan now that Osama bin laden has been killed, a poll indicated Wednesday.

The USA Today-Gallup Poll taken a week after bin Laden's death found that a majority of Americans agree that the United States has accomplished its mission in Afghanistan and should bring the troops home.

Just over a third of those polled felt the United States still has important work to do and should maintain its presence, USA Today reported.

The same demographic groups that gave President Barack Obama his strongest support in 2008 were most in favor of bringing the troops home.

The poll found that two-thirds or more of blacks, Hispanics, liberals, women under 50, low-income Americans, unmarried people and those under 35 support the move.

Among independent voters, 62 percent favor a pullout from Afghanistan.

Even Republicans, traditionally the most supportive of military action, were evenly split with 47 percent saying its time to bring the troops home and 47 percent in favor of their continued presence.

The three-day poll of adults was taken last week, USA Today said.
