MINNEAPOLIS, May 7 (UPI) -- The Dalai Lama is in Minneapolis this weekend for a gathering to promote peace, organizers say.

Hundreds of people showed up outside the University of Minnesota president's residence Friday to see the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

The Dalai Lama bowed toward the crowd of 300 to 400 people, who swarmed the white picket fence surrounding the red brick house to get a look at the Tibetan leader-in-exile. He spoke with university leaders and others at a private get-together at the residence.

"It's always very emotional seeing him," said Tenzin Palkyi, 25, of Brooklyn Park, who has seen him at least five times. "When you see his face, it's just happiness. It makes me feel peaceful."

The Dalai Lama was to speak to members of the local Tibetan community at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Saturday and lead a Tibetan cultural and spiritual ceremony at Mariucci Arena on the university's campus Sunday morning, an event open to the public. He is to give a public address at the arena Sunday afternoon titled "Peace Through Inner Peace."

The university's Center for Spirituality & Healing and the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota are co-hosting the Dalai Lama's visit, dubbed "One Heart, One Mind, One Universe."
