NORTHAMPTON, Mass., May 5 (UPI) -- Two defendants in a bullying case that resulted in the hanging suicide of a 15-year-old girl were sentenced to probation, Massachusetts court records show.
Sentenced to one-year terms of probation in the death of Phoebe Prince, 15, were Sean M. Mulveyhill and Kayla E. Narey, both 18.
Anne O'Brien, Prince's mother, called Mulveyhill a "predator" and said Narey was "weak of character," The (Springfield) Republican reported Thursday.
Prince hanged herself Jan. 14, 2010, after what prosecutors said was continued harassment by Narey, Mulveyhill and several other students.
"It's nearly impossible to measure the impact of Phoebe's death on our lives," O'Brien said in a victim's statement she read in Hampshire Superior Court Wednesday. She said her daughter was "beautiful, gregarious and kind-hearted."
O'Brien said the last time she hugged her daughter was at the crematorium.
"My little girl, so very full of life, was now so cold," O'Brien said.
Mulveyhill pleaded guilty to criminal harassment, a misdemeanor. Three other charges, including one for statutory rape, were dropped.
Narey admitted to enough facts in the case for the finding of guilty on the criminal harassment charge. If she stays out of trouble during her probation, her criminal record will be expunged, the report said.
