FAIRVIEW, Okla., May 4 (UPI) -- FBI agents trying to serve a warrant in Fairview, Okla., Wednesday said they shot and killed a man sought in the May 2010 bombing of a Florida mosque.
Agents said the man, identified as Sandlin Matthews Smith, 46, shot at them as they tried to serve the warrant in Glass Mountain State Park, FBI officials in Jacksonville, Fla., told The Florida Times-Union.
Special Agent Clay Simmonds in Oklahoma City told the Enid (Okla.) News and Eagle no agents were injured.
"Today we received a warrant for an individual wanted out of our Jacksonville, Fla. office for a federal violation who was considered armed and dangerous," Simmonds said.
Smith was wanted for allegedly placing a pipe bomb at the rear of the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida. There were 60 worshipers inside the mosque at the time but no injuries were reported.
Charges against Smith included damaging religious property, obstruction of persons in free exercise of religious beliefs, possession and transfer of a destructive device, possession of an unregistered firearm and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, the Times-Union said.
The FBI said Smith fled Florida last weekend as investigators were piecing together information from witnesses.
FBI agents were joined by Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers in Wednesday's attempt to arrest Smith.
