High-ranking firefighter shot to death

NEW ORLEANS, April 27 (UPI) -- New Orleans police said they are questioning a suspect charged with the fatal shooting of a high-ranking veteran firefighter.

The body of Battalion Chief David Smith, 43, of St. Tammany Parish's 1st Fire Protection District was found in his garage Monday, stuffed in the trunk of his Chevrolet Camaro, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.

Sheriff Jack Strain said the suspect, Michael Lizana, 33, was found at Smith's home when officers arrived to check on a report from a neighbor of gunshots being fired.

Lizana told police he was Smith's roommate.

Deputies left after their initial search of the home failed to turn up anything suspicious.

They went back to the house and found the battalion chief's body after firefighters told them that Smith lived alone.

Lizana was arrested and booked on first-degree murder charges Tuesday.

"We will not rest until we are sure no one else is involved in this crime," Strain said.
