Detective allegedly ran steroid ring

PHILADELPHIA, April 27 (UPI) -- A Philadelphia police detective and his wife have been charged with importing anabolic steroids to the city and distributing them, authorities said Wednesday.

Keith and Kirsten Gidelson were among 15 people whose federal indictments were announced, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. They allegedly received shipments of steroids and human growth hormone every month from California suppliers, and Keith Gidelson also allegedly served as a conduit for steroids from foreign suppliers that he reshipped to other states.

Two other police officers, Joseph McIntyre and George Sambuca, were charged.

"Police officers swear an oath to uphold the law," U.S. Attorney Zane David Memeger said. "When an officer breaks the law, no matter the infraction, he not only violates his oath, he violates the public's trust. In this case, a person who holds the public's trust is alleged to have placed these very harmful substances in the very same hands he was entrusted to protect."

Keith Gidelson allegedly met some of his co-defendants in chat rooms devoted to bodybuilding and also supplied steroids to the owner of a vitamin and supplement store.
