Man dies after stun gun used in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla., April 22 (UPI) -- A Florida man who was acting irrational and disorderly at a theme park Friday died after off-duty police officers working security used a stun gun on him.

The officers attempted to arrest Adam Spencer Johnson, 33, of Winter Haven, just after midnight at Universal CityWalk, an entertainment area next to the Universal Studios theme park, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Sgt. Barbara Jones, a spokeswoman for the Orlando Police Department, described him as disorderly and "grabbing at his beard, grabbing his head."

Jones said Johnson "tussled" with the officers. One officer gave him a jolt from a stun gun and he was handcuffed.

When the officers saw his condition, they called for paramedics, Jones said.

The Police Department said all of the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.

The U.S. Justice Department, in a 2008 report, warned against using stun guns on people who have been using drugs or are agitated. The devices deliver an electric jolt designed to be temporarily disabling.
