BANGOR, Maine, April 21 (UPI) -- A Maine man accused of pushing his wife off a cliff was having an affair with a former girlfriend and stealing his wife's money, authorities allege.

Charles Reed Black, 68, of Camden, is charged with aggravated assault in the incident involving his wife, Lisa Black, 52, the Bangor Daily News reported Thursday.

Lisa Black told police her husband hit her in the head with a rock and then dragged her over a cliff. She fell a short distance then began to run as her husband apparently also fell over the cliff and was injured.

Both were taken to Bangor hospital with serious injuries.

Before she was released from the hospital, Lisa Black was granted a protection order against her husband, who was arrested and charged with assault on his release from the hospital April 15.

Lisa Black told police she had come into a $4 million inheritance after her father's death and her husband had been taking money without her permission.

He was also having an online affair with a former girlfriend, Lisa Black told investigators.

In a court hearing Tuesday bail for Charles Reed Black was set at $240,000.
