Final round of Race to the Top starts

WASHINGTON, April 21 (UPI) -- The public rating period for the six finalist U.S. schools the race for federal money to help overhaul troubled schools began Thursday, the White House said.

Videos produced by the schools and essays on how they are working to reach the goal of preparing a high proportion of students for college are posted online at www.whitehouse.gov/commencement. When the rating period ends April 29, the three finalists will be selected based on those rankings and announced May 2 with President Obama picking the winner that week.

The Race to the Top finalists are Bridgeport High School, Bridgeport, Wash.; Booker T. Washington High School, Memphis; High Tech High International, San Diego; Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12, School for Creative and Performing Arts, Pittsburgh; Science Park High School, Newark, N.J.; Wayne Early Middle College High School, Goldsboro, N.C.
