NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., April 20 (UPI) -- A Rutgers University student faces 15 counts for spying on his roommate, who committed suicide, New Jersey authorities announced Wednesday.
Dharun Ravi, 19, has been indicted on charges including invasion of privacy, bias crimes and evidence and witness tampering, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said.
The grand jury found that Ravi allegedly tried to erase evidence that he had secretly viewed Tyler Clementi in an encounter with a visitor Sept. 19, 2010, and invited others to view another encounter Sept. 21, The (Newark) Star-Ledger reported. Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge Sept. 22.
Ravi also tried to keep witnesses from testifying and misled investigators, Kaplan said.
Authorities say Ravi used the computer of his friend Molly Wei to activate a hidden webcam in his dorm room.
Wei, 19, has been charged with invasion of privacy, but her case was not presented to the jury "at this time," Kaplan said.
Clementi's parents, through their attorney, said: "The grand jury indictment spells out cold and calculated acts against our son Tyler. … We are eager to have the process move forward for justice in this case and to reinforce the standards of acceptable conduct in our society."
