KALAMAZOO, Mich., April 19 (UPI) -- A Kalamazoo, Mich., police officer was shot and killed by a man who then apparently shot himself to death, authorities said.

Officers responding to a call of shots being fired late Monday encountered a man standing on a porch, a release from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said.

The man, a 31-year-old Kalamazoo resident whose name was not released, "advanced toward an officer, brandishing a handgun and an exchange of gunfire occurred between the suspect and the initial arriving officer," the release said.

The man then ran between houses on the street where he encountered a second officer who was shot to death in an exchange of gunfire, the Kalamazoo Gazette reported.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, WWMT-TV, Kalamazoo, reported.

The department's Criminal Investigations Division and its Office of Professional Standards would be investigating the incident, authorities said.
