DETROIT, April 19 (UPI) -- Former Detroit Councilwoman Monica Conyers should remain behind bars, and not under home confinement, federal prosecutors say.
Conyers, wife of U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., is seven months into a 37-year prison term. Prosecutors filed a rebuttal Monday to her motion to be released from prison, the Detroit Free Press reported.
"This court did not commit any error in sentencing Conyers, and in any case, it lacks jurisdiction to reconsider a sentence that has become final and has been appealed," Assistant U.S. Attorney Patricia Gaedeke said.
Conyers pleaded guilty in 2009, admitting she took money from Synagro, a company seeking a $1.2 billion sludge disposal contract. She has since tried to change her plea and is appealing a court's decision that it is final.
Since September, Conyers has been in the federal prison camp for women in Alderson, W. Va., a facility nicknamed Camp Cupcake.
