Democratic PACs proliferate

WASHINGTON, April 15 (UPI) -- A new Democratic political action committee, the House Majority PAC, is dedicated to regaining the lower house of the U.S. Congress, its head says.

The PAC was formed this week, joining a handful of other Democratic groups aimed at countering the Republican fundraising juggernaut that made itself felt in last year's House and Senate races, The New York Times reported Friday. The group plans to begin running ads this weekend as Congress begins a two-week recess.

"The House Majority PAC is committed to building a long-term organization that can take on the Republican outside groups in the battle for the House Majority," Executive Director Alixandria Lapp said. "Our objective is to help the Democrats win back the House. We will hold Republican incumbents and candidates accountable for their policies that take our country in the wrong direction."

Other groups include Know Your Care and Protect Your Care, both aimed at building public support for healthcare reform; Majority PAC, which focuses on helping Democratic Senate candidates; the Burton/Sweeney Group, run by a former deputy press secretary to President Obama and a former aide to Rahm Emanuel, and American Bridge, chaired by Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, a member of the country's best-known Democratic family and formed by David Brock of Media Matters for America.
