Band leader with HIV admits sex with boy

AUGUSTA, Ga., April 14 (UPI) -- An HIV-positive assistant Georgia band leader was arrested for allegedly coercing a 15-year-old boy from the band into having sex with him twice, police said.

Travis McCauley, 32, assistant band director and co-founder of the Central Savannah River Area All-Star Band, was booked on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, aggravated child molestation and reckless conduct by a person infected with the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS, police said.

McCauley allegedly had sex with a boy in the band three weeks ago and then again last week, the Richmond County, Ga., Sheriff's Office said.

The boy didn't know McCauley was HIV-positive at the time, but reported the incidents when he found out McCauley was, police said.

After McCauley was confronted through a text message, he admitted to the acts, The Augusta Chronicle said.

Investigators also investigated the possibility McCauley may have infected other people, although not necessarily minors.

The band, started Nov. 13, 2005, has "128 gifted students," a review of the band's Myspace page indicated.

"Our bands have attended various competitions and 90 percent of our graduating students have received music scholarships to various colleges and universities around the Southeast," the Myspace page said.
