Divers search waters off Long Island

LONG ISLAND, N.Y., April 13 (UPI) -- Investigators have turned their focus to the waters off New York's Long Island Wednesday, searching for possible victims of a suspected serial killer.

New York State Police Tuesday finished a search of the area in Nassau County thought to be consistent with where the remains of 10 bodies were discovered in Suffolk County, WCBS-TV, New York, reported.

"We're concerned, outraged that some animal could murder someone and discard their body by the side of the road," said Ed Mangano, Nassau County executive.

The entire search was prompted by the disappearance of Shannon Gilbert, a prostitute last seen in May by Long Island doctor Peter Hackett.

The fear of a serial killer arose in December when four bodies were discovered near Gilgo Beach in Suffolk County. The victims all were identified as prostitutes who advertised their services on Craigslist.

"I can't imagine who would do such a horrible, mean thing," Hackett told WABC-TV, New York. He said he has been interviewed two or three times.

A Nassau County medical examiner's office confirmed the remains are human.
