Charges filed in unborn baby sale case

INDIANAPOLIS, April 12 (UPI) -- Police in Indiana have accused a convicted child molester and his sister-in-law of trying to buy an unborn infant.

Indianapolis police investigators allege Michael Overby and his sister-in-law, Debbie Overby, tried to purchase a baby from Rose Faucett, who police say has a history of prostitution, WXIN-TV, Indianapolis, reported Monday.

"[They] made arrangements for the custody of that child in exchange for a place to live for about a month and about $300 in cash," police spokesman Paul Thompson said.

Police said Michael Overby signed a paternity affidavit at Wishard Hospital claiming to be the baby's biological father.

Investigators say Phillip Hester, alleged to be in on the plot, is probably the real father and that DNA tests are pending.

Michael Overby has a criminal record that includes a child molestation conviction in 1984 for which he served two years of a four-year prison sentence, WXIN-TV reported.

"I don't know that they would be able to adopt a child under those circumstances," Thompson said.
