PHILADELPHIA, April 6 (UPI) -- The wife of a Philadelphia doctor charged with killing viable infants during abortions has been released to house arrest.
A judge reduced Pearl Gosnell's bail to $50,000, the Philadelphia Daily News reported. Common Pleas Judge Benjamin Lerner said Monday she must remain under "strict house arrest," including electronic monitoring.
Dr. Kermit Gosnell has been charged with killing a patient who died during a botched abortion, and deliberately killing seven babies after they were delivered alive during illegal late-term procedures. He remains in jail.
His wife has been charged with conspiracy, participating in a criminal organization and involvement in an illegal abortion. Many of the employees at the clinic also face charges, including murder.
Pearl Gosnell's lawyer, F. Michael Medway, argued she faces only a short sentence, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. But the judge disagreed.
"The charges against her allege that she was an integral part of a much, much more serious series of offenses," Lerner said. "This is no guidelines case."
The Gosnells have two children, a son in college and a 13-year-old daughter. The daughter has been living with a neighbor since her parents' arrest.
