Cops resume search for Long Island victims

OAK BEACH, N.Y., April 6 (UPI) -- Some beachfront Long Island, N.Y., residents needed ID to get to their homes Wednesday as police searched for victims of a suspected serial killer.

The searches at Gilgo Beach and Oak Beach have been extended into small gated communities, WABC-TV, New York, reported.

Fog, rain and blowing sand hampered the hunt by Suffolk County and state police Tuesday, when no more remains were found.

Eight bodies have been found so far, and about half of the target area has been scoured.

The Suffolk County medical examiner has not released any information on the four sets of remains found Monday. Their DNA is being analyzed by New York City medical examiners.

Police say none of the newly found victims is Jersey City, N.J., prostitute Shannan Gilbert, who disappeared May 1, 2010, after banging on the door of an Oak Beach home before running off again, screaming that she was being chased.

Her disappearance led to the discovery of the bodies at the beach, which police believe were killed elsewhere.

No suspect has been identified.
