HOUSTON, April 2 (UPI) -- The intern who cradled U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' head moments after she was shot says he has talked with her several times by phone.
Daniel Hernandez told The Arizona Republic Friday he had talked with the Arizona congresswoman as recently as Wednesday and is amazed by her recovery. He characterized the conversations as "short interactions and long interactions" but declined to reveal specifics to protect her privacy.
"Pretty soon you will be able to ask her yourself because she's just doing extremely well and recovering very quickly," Hernandez told the newspaper.
"It's great hearing her voice," the 21-year-old said.
Giffords was critically wounded in the head Jan. 8 when a gunman opened fire at her constituency event outside a Tucson supermarket. Six people died and a dozen others were wounded in the massacre and a 22-year-old Tucson man, Jared Lee Loughner, faces charges in the shooting spree.
Giffords is undergoing rehabilitation at a Houston hospital.
The Republic said Giffords spokesman C.J. Karamargin wouldn't say whether the congresswoman is having regular phone conversations but noted there have been multiple reports of visitors to her hospital room from friends, family and other members of Congress.
