Snow hits northeast on April Fools' Day

BOSTON, April 1 (UPI) -- A spring storm dumped inches of snow on parts of New England on Friday, April Fools' Day.

A National Weather Service winter storm warning remained in effect at midday for most of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Forecasters warned elsewhere in the Northeast of roads slicked by freezing rain.

By 5 a.m., about 5 inches of snow had fallen in the Worcester area in central Massachusetts, the Boston Globe reported.

The Boston area was getting a cold rain for the morning rush hour.

In eastern Pennsylvania, NWS forecasters said there was a chance of rain or snow through Saturday.

The northeaster brought heavy snow. In Massachusetts, more than 10,000 homes and businesses lost power as transmission lines came down.
