Friends, family say goodbye to Ferraro

WASHINGTON, March 31 (UPI) -- Friends and family said farewell to trailblazing politician Geraldine Ferraro during a private funeral service in New York Thursday.

Ferraro, the first female vice presidential candidate on a major political party ticket, died Saturday from a form of blood cancer. She was 75 years old.

Among those who spoke at the funeral were 1984 presidential candidate Walter Mondale, who tapped Ferraro as his running mate; former President Bill Clinton; Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, New York cable news channel NY1 reported.

"All of us today are going to remember her for her greatness, for her commitment, for her dedication, and for what she offered this country," said U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said. "I loved in her [1984 Democratic National Convention acceptance speech] when she said, 'It's not what America can do for women, it's what women can do for America.'"
