SoCal groups square off over immigration

CLAREMONT, Calif., March 20 (UPI) -- Both sides claimed victory after a weekend shouting match in California between immigrant right activists and demonstrators from a white supremacist group.

The clash took place in Claremont, a college town outside Los Angeles that the National Socialist Movement claims coddles and encourages illegal immigration.

The Los Angeles Times said Sunday the confrontation on Foothill Boulevard was limited to shouting and did not get physical. Scores of police were on hand, but there were no reports of arrests.

Jeff Hall, a spokesman for the National Socialists, told the Times their rally was sparked by members in Claremont who objected to the city's policies they claim protect illegal immigrants.

Counter demonstrators called their beliefs "backward and racist."

"We're not going to stand by and let them roll over people's rights," said Ernesto Ayala, a member of La Raza Unida and the Brown Berets.
