Wisconsin captain admits bombing boats

GREEN BAY, Wis., March 16 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin charter boat captain admitted bombing competitors' boats in a Lake Michigan marina, court records show.

Joseph Sloma of Denmark, Wis., filed an agreement Friday in federal court in Green Bay to plead guilty, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. The formal plea to one count of using an explosive device to destroy property used in interstate commerce will be entered March 23.

The pipe bombs set off a huge fire at the Salmon Harbor Marina in Kewaunee in September 2009.

Sloma admitted planting a bomb aboard the Trout Scout. The explosion and fire destroyed that boat and two others, Peanuts IV and Predator, and extensively damaged the Crown Royal.

Sloma also admitted bombing another boat, Fish Sticks, in June 2009.

The crime carries a penalty of five to 20 years in prison, but prosecutors recommend Sloma serve six, followed by three years of supervised release. He also agreed to pay restitution, a sum not yet set.
