Parents sue Miami archdiocese over abuse

MIAMI, March 10 (UPI) -- A Florida couple say the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Miami failed to investigate complaints about a music teacher who later molested their son.

The couple, identified as Mother Doe 72 and Father Doe 72, filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, The Miami Herald reported. They said Miguel Cala, 37, who is awaiting trial for allegedly molesting another boy, sexually abused their 11-year-old son while giving him private lessons at their home in Broward County.

The lawsuit, filed by Jeffrey Herman, an Aventura lawyer who has filed similar suits involving Cala and other alleged abusers, said there was "no investigation or responsive action" from church officials, even though complaints about the teacher were received as early as 2000.

Mary Ross Agosta, a diocesan spokeswoman, said officials have cooperated with the Broward County sheriff since Cala's arrest and asked parents to talk to their children about "inappropriate behavior."
