Judge allows Miami recall to go forward

MIAMI, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- The recall vote against Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez can proceed on schedule, a judge ruled Friday.

Circuit Judge Barbara Areces rejected Alvarez's argument that the recall petitions were legally flawed, The Miami Herald reported. She said Clerk of Courts Harvey Ruvin "did an incredible job" when he certified the petitions in November.

The recall election is scheduled for March 15 with early voting set to begin Monday. Miami-Dade Commissioner Natacha Seijas is also targeted for recall.

The recall has been promoted by Norman Braman, former owner of the Philadelphia Eagles and head of Braman Enterprises, which owns car dealerships in Florida. Braman became a billionaire first with a chain of department stores and then with a pharmaceutical company. He waged a legal battle in the 1980s over a Miami sales tax to pay for a new stadium for the Dolphins and more recently sued in a failed attempt to block a new ballpark for the Marlins.

Braman blamed Alvarez for an increase in local property taxes when he launched the petition drive.
