Missing wife case suspect jumps off cliff

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif., Feb. 24 (UPI) -- A California man who jumped off a cliff as detectives followed him is suspected in the disappearance of his wife more than a year ago, officials said.

Authorities think David Viens, 47, was attempting suicide when he jumped Wednesday from a Rancho Palos Verdes cliff, the Los Angeles Daily Breeze reported.

He fell 80 feet, but was rescued by sheriff's deputies and firefighters, the newspaper said.

He was hospitalized in critical condition, and will face murder charges if he lives, the newspaper said.

His wife Dawn, 39, hasn't been seen since she left his restaurant in Lomita on Oct. 18, 2009. Viens never reported her missing, investigators said.

Investigators discovered blood spattered on the walls inside his former home, the newspaper said.
