ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Feb. 23 (UPI) -- A Florida teen accused of killing a St. Petersburg police officer was described by his principal Wednesday as having an attendance problem.

Principal Kevin Gordon of Gibbs High School said Nicholas Lemmon Lindsey, 16, was a "fairly quiet" kid who was struggling with his studies and frequently absent from school, The St. Petersburg Times reported.

"He hadn't been to school much this month," Gordon said. "I would describe him as more introverted than extroverted. He would stand around and observe and be quiet."

Lindsey was arrested on charges of fatally shooting officer David S. Crawford, 46, multiple times while Crawford was investigating a report of a prowler.

At least 50 law enforcement personnel, along with Pinellas County sheriff's helicopter and canine units, searched a downtown area of St. Petersburg for the shooting suspect.

Lindsey lived with his mother in the Citrus Grove Apartments.
