KALAMAZOO, Mich., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- A 10-day-old infant was fatally mauled by the family pit bull as his mother slept, Michigan police said Monday.
The mother, whose name has not been released, told Kalamazoo police she put the baby down for a nap Saturday afternoon and fell asleep in another bedroom, the Kalamazoo Gazette reported. The dog, without provocation, pushed open the bedroom door and attacked the boy, police said.
The baby was dead when police arrived. The preliminary investigation has not found any negligence.
The 1-year-old pit bull was taken away by animal control, quarantined and euthanized, police said.
"These cases are very difficult, and obviously, it's a very emotional topic," Chief Jeff Hadley said. "But sometimes ... it's just a tragic, tragic accident."
Neighbors said the woman in her mid-20s lived in the house with another son, who police said is 2 years old.
