Witness recalls smell from rotting body

DETROIT, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- A Detroit woman who had sex with an accused killer recalled the odor from his girlfriend's decomposing body under the bed, a report on her testimony said.

"I said, 'Oh! It smells like mildew in here,'" Gloria Houston testified Tuesday at a hearing on Gregory Harris, The Detroit News reported. "'Why you got a fan up in the window in January?' He says, 'To kill the scent.'"

But she said she stayed the night with Harris anyway.

Harris is accused of killing Zilphia Craig, who had been dead for weeks when her decomposing body was found in plastic bags under his bed Feb. 2, the newspaper said. She was reported missing Jan. 19.

Harris said Craig demanded drugs and knocked herself out trying to run away, police homicide investigator Donald Olsen testified. She was blind.

Harris also said he panicked because he had not reported his change of address, Olsen said. He was a registered sex offender after a conviction in 1995.

The suspect admitted killing Craig with a blow to the head, his brother, James, testified.

Craig's family said the drugs she needed were for her diabetes, which also was the cause of her blindness.
