DAYTON, Ohio, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- The daughter of a recently deceased woman in Ohio and a cemetery owner said a funeral home mishandled the mother's burial.
Loretta Goldsmith of Dayton, the daughter of the late Leila Wilcoxon, and Darren Boykin of Greencastle Cemetery, said McLin Funeral Home caused Wilcoxon to be buried in the wrong grave site Jan. 22, the Dayton Daily News reported Tuesday.
"All we did is what we were contracted to do. We did exactly as (Scherrie McLin) instructed us," Boykin said.
McLin's lawyer said Goldsmith could have told the funeral home and the cemetery that there already had been a grave reserved for Wilcoxon, which would have prevented the error.
"If (Goldsmith) were aware of a reserved grave, she should have mentioned it before the burial," said Anne Frayne, McLin's lawyer.
Goldsmith said she did ask during the funeral about the burial site and believed her mother would be buried in the correct plot.
Wilcoxon's reburial beside her late husband is scheduled for this week, the newspaper said.
The incident occurred after it was reported the state revoked the funeral home's articles of incorporation for outstanding taxes and had ordered the establishment padlocked for failure to pay a debt, the Daily News reported.
