Sen. Stevens' FBI file spans 3,600 pages

WASHINGTON, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- The FBI kept an eye on the late Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, including allegations of possible cronyism and substance abuse, his recently opened file says.

The 3,600-page file goes back to the 1950s and was primarily made up of media reports on Stevens' long career in the U.S. Senate, The Hill said Sunday.

But the file also included reports from sources that he was driving a car purchased with campaign contributions and was in line to inherit a yacht as thanks for his efforts to steer federal funds to Alaska.

The Hill said this weekend that the G-men also made note of an unverified allegation from a drug dealer that the senator had scored small amounts of cocaine from him three times in the 1980s.

Stevens was killed in a plane crash last summer, two years after his 40-year Senate career ended with his defeat by Democrat Mark Begich.
