TAYLOR MILL, Ky., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Officials said several motorists stopped to rescue a Kentucky woman after her car went off the road, flipped onto its roof and burst into flames.
The middle-aged woman, Melissa Robbins of Independence, may have been unconscious behind the wheel before her crash, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
At least two drivers who witnessed the accident stopped and ran to the car, frantically trying to determine how to remove the woman, the Enquirer reported.
A former firefighter, Eric Tungate of Colerain Township, kicked in a window as others crouched down to look inside the car, unsure what of what to do because of the flames coming from engine, the newspaper said.
Scott Williams, a painter from Hamersville, Ohio, lessened the blaze by repeatedly using a large paint bucket to scoop mud and water from the ground nearby, the newspaper reported.
A Southgate man, Bryan Brulport, 37, who is a nursing student at Northern Kentucky University, kicked in a window and dragged Robbins to safety, the Enquirer reported.
"I saw the car was on fire," Brulport said, adding he asked the other rescuers whether anyone was still in the car. "They said, 'No, it's on fire, we can't do anything.'"
"A witness said that when the car passed him it looked like the driver was slumped over the wheel. So it's possible that the driver was unconscious -- it could be medical-related, but we just don't know for sure yet," Taylor Mill Police Sgt. Karen Spanyer said.
An emergency medical helicopter flew Robbins, whose condition was unknown, to a hospital.
