Woman, 20, dies after buttocks injection

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- A British woman has died after receiving buttocks-enhancement injections in Pennsylvania, police said.

Claudia Adusei, 20, flew into Philadelphia with three friends Saturday and checked into a motel near the airport, Philadelphia homicide Detective Lt. John Walker told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

At some point over the weekend, Adusei and another of the women received injections they believed to be silicone. She was taken to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Pa., at 1:30 a.m. Monday with chest pains and shortness of breath and died there.

Delaware County Medical Examiner Fredric Hellman said a cause of death will not be released until her family is notified. The other woman, who got injections to her buttocks and hips, was not hospitalized.

Dozens of injuries and a few deaths have been reported from illegal buttocks-enhancement injections of silicone gel or liquid, U.S. health authorities say.

"Silicone injections used to be done years ago to make breasts bigger ... but that has not been done, legitimately, for 40 or 50 years," said Dr. R. Barrett Noone, a Pennsylvania plastic surgeon.
