Man found guilty of beheading his wife

BUFFALO, N.Y., Feb. 8 (UPI) -- A jury in Buffalo, N.Y. took less than an hour to find Muzzammil "Mo" Hassan guilty of murdering and beheading his wife, Aasiya in 2009.

Hassan, 46, who represented himself during the two-week trial, faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison for his wife's death, The Buffalo (N.Y.) News reported Tuesday.

Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III said Hassan showed "an incredible lack of self-awareness" during the trial by calling defense witnesses who helped the prosecution's case.

"In his twisted mind, he really believes what he did was justified," Sedita said.

Prosecutors Colleen Curtin Gable and Paul Bonnano depicted Hassan as a long-time spouse abuser who methodically planned the attack on his wife at their Bridges TV studio on Feb. 12, 2009.

Gable said Hassan decided to kill his wife after she served him with divorce papers.

Erie County Judge Thomas Franczyk set sentencing for March 9.
