Gunman surrenders after Detroit standoff

DETROIT, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- A man with a gun held off police at a house in Detroit for about 3 1/2 hours early Friday after officers responded to a report of shots fired, officials said.

The man surrendered about 8 a.m., the Detroit Free Press reported. The only casualty was one of three pit bulls in the house, shot because officers feared it might get out.

Officers who arrived at the scene about 4:30 a.m. saw the man firing into the air, police said. He moved inside when he saw them and refused commands to come out.

Deputy Police Chief James Tolbert said investigators had not determined why the man was shooting.

"It appears they were just random shots not directed at anyone," Tolbert said.

Police blocked off the area around the house and brought in a SWAT team, which broke down the front door.
