Fugitive killer arrested in Mexico

WEST HARTFORD, Conn., Feb. 3 (UPI) -- A man who has been on the run for more than two decades after being sentenced to 60 years in prison for a Connecticut killing was caught in Mexico, police said.

West Hartford police said Adam Zachs, 47, is being held in Mexico City pending extradition to the United States, The Hartford Courant reported. He was arrested Tuesday in Leon Guanajuato, a city in central Mexico northwest of Mexico City.

Zachs had a Mexican wife and children and worked in computer repair, West Hartford Police Chief James Strillacci reported.

After Zachs was convicted of the 1987 shooting of Peter Carone, 29, of West Hartford, he was allowed to remain free pending appeal after posting $250,000 bail. He did not appear for a scheduled hearing in June 1989, the newspaper said.

Zachs and Carone were acquaintances who were both in the Prospect Cafe watching the NCAA basketball tournament. The two began arguing and took the fight outside, where Zachs shot Carone in the back.

"It's been a long 20-plus years," Jim Carone, a brother of the victim, said.
