Suspect in massacre arrested in Canada

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A California resident suspected of taking part in a 1982 massacre in Guatemala that killed more than 150 people has been arrested in Canada, authorities said.

Jorge Sosa, 52, who holds both U.S. and Canadian citizenship, was arrested near Calgary, Alberta last week and U.S. authorities are seeking extradition, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

Sosa is suspected of belonging to the Guatemalan military unit that, while searching for guerrilla fighters, killed more than 150 civilians, including children, in the country's infamous Dos Erres massacre, the newspaper said.

Sosa, who lives in Moreno Valley, Calif., allegedly concealed his foreign military service and is accused of lying under oath by saying he had never committed any crime or offense when he applied for U.S. citizenship in March 2008, authorities said.

Authorities allege Sosa was a commander in the Guatemalan special forces unit known as the Kaibiles involved in the massacre.

A spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles said that if convicted Sosa could face 15 years in prison, be stripped of his U.S. citizenship and be deported.
