26 pounds of opium seized at S.F. airport

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A huge opium haul was found hidden in packages at a San Francisco International Airport mail facility, a customs official said.

Officer Ed Low of U.S. Customs and Border Protection told the Bay Area News Group 26 1/2 pounds of the illegal drug were discovered in a shipment of rattan stools from Thailand.

The furniture aroused suspicion Jan. 15. When it was put through an X-ray machine, drugs were found hidden in the stool legs. A similar shipment was found the next day.

Both packages were bound for Northern California, Low said, but no arrests had been made.

Low said officers decide whether to inspect shipments based on their point of origin and discrepancies in weight.
