Air passengers tackle deranged man

NEW YORK, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Two passengers on a flight from Rio de Janeiro to New York said they restrained a man who became upset and attacked a flight attendant.

Ramiro Silos, a Brazilian who owns two restaurants in New York, said the incident occurred Thursday when the plane was about an hour away from Kennedy International Airport, the New York Daily News reported. He said a passenger, later identified by police as Michael Isabelle, 63, of Framingham, Mass., apparently became enraged because a beverage cart was in his way as he tried to reach a bathroom.

"The guy was big and he was screaming, screaming, screaming," Silos said. "I could not understand him. But when we took him down, we took him down hard."

American Airlines confirmed there had been a disruptive passenger on the flight. Isabelle was taken to Jamaica Hospital's psychiatric unit, the report said.
