Winter storm moves east

CINCINNATI, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- A snowstorm moved east Thursday, dumping several inches of snow on Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio as it headed for the East Coast, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service posted winter weather watches and warnings from western Tennessee through northern Maine.

Freezing drizzle left a glaze of ice on roads in Oklahoma Thursday morning, The Oklahoman reported. At least one death was blamed on the weather, a driver whose vehicle skidded off the road, the state Highway Patrol said.

Fender-benders became so common troopers were no longer responding to crashes in which no one was injured.

In Louisville, Ky., about 3 inches had fallen by late afternoon, The Courier-Journal reported. While the snow fouled the afternoon rush hour, police reported no major problems.

The snow was expected to stop by midnight, leaving a total of 5 inches. Forecasters warned that plunging temperatures could make Friday dangerously icy in much of Kentucky.

In Cincinnati, about 100 flights had been canceled by midday because of weather conditions at airports, The Enquirer said.
