Mich. police officer killed in burglary

DETROIT, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- A Livonia, Mich., police officer killed when he interrupted a home burglary was the first officer in city history to die investigating a felony, officials say.

Larry Nehasil, 48, a 20-year veteran of the Livonia Police Department, was tracking suspects in a string of home break-ins in the metropolitan Detroit area when he was shot and killed Monday, The Detroit News reported.

One of two men allegedly breaking into a home in the Walled Lake area was also killed in the exchange of gunfire with several other Livonia police officers, police said.

A second suspect was arrested and is being held.

Police have not released the names of either of the two men.

"The Livonia Police Department has suffered a terrible loss," Police Chief Robert Stevenson said. "He's going to be sorely missed by our department."

Nehasil, who was married with two children, had previously worked for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, police said.
