WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Americans' satisfaction with the way things are going in the country is near a 12-month low, a survey indicated.

Gallup found 19 percent of Americans polled expressed satisfaction with the current state of affairs, 2 points above December's 17 percent.

Despite GOP gains in November's midterm elections, Republicans are less satisfied than Democrats, 13 percent to 27 percent, respectively, Gallup reported Friday.

Twenty-six percent of those polled said the economy is the No. 1 problem in the country, while 29 percent pointed to unemployment.

In a bright spot for lawmakers, Americans' approval of Congress jumped 7 points to 20 percent from December to January, reflecting hopes for the new session.

Gallup surveyed 1,018 adults Jan. 7-9. The margin of error was 4 percentage points.
