Detroit defendants must pay for lawyers

DETROIT, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- A federal judge is ordering two defendants in a Detroit corruption case to cover part of their legal costs.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds decreed Tuesday that Bernard Kilpatrick, father of former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, must pay $100 a month for his court-appointed lawyer, John Shea, the Detroit Free Press reported. She also told former city water department boss Victor Mercado to pay $200 a month for his lawyer, Martin Crandall.

Edmunds ruled that although both men had proved they could not afford their own lawyers, they still should make partial payments. She did not elaborate.

Mercado, Bernard Kilpatrick, Kwame Kilpatrick and two others were indicted last month on charges they manipulated the contracting system to enrich themselves. All five have pleaded not guilty.
