TUCSON, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- The parents of a Tucson man accused of killing six people and wounding 14 others are in deep shock and have secluded themselves in their home, a neighbor said.

Randy and Amy Loughner returned home from grocery shopping Saturday to learn their only child, Jared Lee Loughner, 22, had been arrested after the shooting spree at a political event for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

Neighbor Wayne Smith told the newspaper he broke the news to the couple and they went into shock. Smith, 70, said the father called and asked him to fetch the couple's mail.

"They're both in there crying. He's crying and hanging on to me and she's not even out of bed," Smith said.

"He's broken up about his son, but also about all those people who died."

Smith said the Loughners were very quiet and kept to themselves.

"I didn't even know their last name until Saturday," he said.

One of the six people killed in the shooting rampage was Federal Judge John Roll. Among the wounded is Giffords, who was in critical condition with head injuries.
