NYC official under fire for snow mess

NEW YORK, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- New York's deputy mayor, hailed as re-inventor of government, is in trouble for the alleged mismanagement of the December blizzard.

Stephen Goldsmith, a former mayor of Indianapolis and professor at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, was appointed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg last year. As deputy mayor for operations, he is responsible for police, fire, sanitation and a dozen other agencies that touch New Yorkers' daily lives.

But during the blizzard, he was at his Washington hometown house, uninvolved in the crucial decision not to declare a snow emergency, and just writing "Good snow work by sanitation" on Twitter, The New York Times reports.

On Monday, the City Council is set to summon Goldsmith to explain what went wrong, the Times said.

City Public Advocate Bill de Blasio said, "I think he's very intelligent and very steeped in the work of government. But this seems to be an abstract enterprise for him: It's not his city, and he'll be here as long as he wants to be here. There's something about City Hall that's supposed to be more than a job. It's supposed to be a lifestyle and a total commitment."

Goldsmith remains on leave from Harvard, and his wife lives in Washington.
