CHICAGO, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- An Illinois congressman says he dropped out of the Chicago mayoral race in order to bolster the campaign of another contender, former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun.
The departure of Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill., leaves Moseley Braun as the only African-American candidate in the race to succeed outgoing Mayor Richard Daley.
"I want to make sure at least one of us has what is needed," said Davis, who acknowledged that having more than one African-American in the race could dilute potential political and financial support.
The Chicago Tribune said Saturday that the city's African-American leadership held a number of meetings during which it was agreed that fielding a single candidate would be the best shot at winning the election.
The field now consists of Moseley Braun, former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, City Clerk Miguel del Valle and former Chicago Board of Education President Gery Chico.
