TSA takes aim at thermos jugs

WASHINGTON, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Insulated thermos jugs and coffee mugs have been added to the list of items for special screening by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.

The TSA issued its notice Christmas Eve as thousands of people across the country were preparing to travel. The agency said terrorists might attempt to conceal explosives in thermoses and cups.

The agency is not banning insulated beverage containers from carry-on or checked bags. But it said in its notice that they will be carefully examined and in individual cases could be banned from the plane.

The agency said the 3-1-1 rules for liquids are still in effect. Those require liquids to be in bottles holding 3 ounces or less and stowed in one-quarter Ziploc bags, with passengers allowed to have only one.

Security has been ramped up this year with full-body scanners in many airports. Last Christmas a man was charged with trying to blow up a plane approaching Detroit using explosives concealed in his underwear.
