Author of pedophile guide appears in court

BARTOW, Fla., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- The author of "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure" made an initial court appearance Wednesday in Florida.

Philip R. Greaves II of Pueblo, Colo., was being held in Polk County in lieu of $5,000 bail. At a hearing, a judge refused a request to release him on his own recognizance, The Ledger of Lakeland, Fla., reported.

Greaves was arrested Monday in Colorado after Polk County investigators ordered a copy of the book. He waived extradition and arrived in Florida Tuesday.

Talking to reporters waiting for him outside the county jail, Greaves, 47, defended his book and denied being a pedophile. He said he had been molested as a child and then had sex with younger children himself until he became so sickened by his actions he completely gave up sex for 13 years.

Greaves described his book as an attempt to "exorcise" his own childhood experiences and to tell pedophiles "what not to do." He also defended the work on free-speech grounds.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told reporters the First Amendment does not protect the book, comparing Greaves to someone who threatens the president's life.
