Poll: Americans support tax deal elements

PRINCETON, N.J., Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Americans approve of two key elements in the tax compromise hammered out between President Obama and congressional Republicans, a Gallup poll indicates.

Sixty-six percent of Americans said they favor the two-year extension of tax rates enacted during George W. Bush's administration for all Americans, and an identical percentage said they support extending unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed, results of the poll released Wednesday indicated.

The Princeton, N.J., polling agency said the latest results differed from results from a poll in November, that indicated 40 percent favored extending the tax cuts for all Americans, including the wealthiest taxpayers.

Breaking down responses from the extreme wings of both parties, Gallup said only liberal Democrats oppose extending the tax breaks for everyone, with just 39 percent saying they favored it . Similarly, Gallup said conservative Republicans opposing the extension of unemployment benefits, with only 38 percent saying the approved of the extension.

Results for are based on nationwide telephone interviews with 1,003 adults conducted Friday through Monday. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
