Alleged acid-attack faker trial delayed

VANCOUVER, Wash., Dec. 8 (UPI) -- The woman who allegedly faked an acid attack has waived her right to a speedy trial, asking a Washington state judge to delay the proceedings until March.

Bethany Storro appeared in court in Vancouver Tuesday, The Columbian reported. She was flanked by her mother, Nancy Neuwelt, and her lawyer, Andrew Wheeler.

The hearing in Clark County Superior Court lasted only 3 minutes. Judge John Nichols, who had scheduled the trial to begin Dec. 20, set a new date of March 9.

Storro, who is charged with theft by deception, received thousands of dollars in donations when she reported in August that a black woman had maimed her by throwing acid in her face. She later allegedly admitted she caused the damage herself with drain cleaner, the newspaper said.

Deputy Prosecutor Tony Golik said Storro is still being treated in a residential psychiatric facility in the area.
